A proper lawn maintenance regimen

Keeping your landscape beautiful all year long doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

It isn’t difficult to keep your yard healthy and lush. Good maintenance practices are the key to not having to overhaul your yard every spring. It starts with keeping your lawn mowed at a height of two-and-a-half to three inches making sure to use a sharp blade and leaving the clippings on the ground.

Encourage drought resistance by watering deeply and infrequently. Your plants will grow deeper root systems and be prepared for drier conditions. Early morning watering is the ideal time in order to reduce water loss by evaporation or wind.

Fertilizing in late spring and fall will help plants recover from depleted soil. Fertilizers with a slow-release form of nitrogen help spread nutrients uniformly and prevent chemicals leaching out of the soil.

Follow up the spring by core aerating your lawn. This will reduce the effects of soil compaction and aide in the flow of water, air and nutrients to the root system.

Finally, dethatching your lawn when needed will remove excess organic material that can harbor insects and disease. Keep in mind that over-watering and excessive fertilizing may decrease the population of soil organisms that would normally control thatch levels.

Following a few simple guidelines can help you keep a beautiful lawn without having to renovate every season.
